I did pretty good. If you consider three cents an hour good.
I think the earnings generally correlate with the IQ exhibited by the great unwashed masses of NV these days which is approaching absolute zero. Time to move on to a more friendly planet for sentient life.
I keep thinking things are going to get better here. Call me an optimist. Among other things that you normally do. heh.
I'm always pessimistic in the short run, optimistic in the long run but I think the general curve of such websites is down, down, down. Newsvine these days makes me exceedingly peevish and I don't need any further motion upward in that regard lest it ruin my normally sunny personality. Speaking of peevish though I can't imagine John Fox will be anything but that after the way the Gints ran all over the Carolina 1st team D in the 1st qtr tonight. Plug ugly. G'night.
I have now finalized my decision to henceforth publish no original writing on Newsvine after discovering Politics Daily. I will continue to seed from time to time but that's about it. PD pays and the writing is smart. Neither of these things can be said any longer about Newsvine. I would encourage other members to submit articles for consideration but one must use one's given name. This isn't an asshat blog like 95% of the others.
Thanks schnoo for posting the notice about earnings. My primary motive in writing is not money -- but it is nice.
Thanks Bill Harrison for the information about and link to Politics Daily. I checked it out briefly and may register with and submit to them.
But personally I enjoy writing about a wide variety of things in addition to politics. I enjoy the diversity of articles, seeds, and comments on Newsvine.
And Tyler seems to be making progress on some of the outrageous stuff -- I hope we don't see more of the biased moderating and disrespectful commenting on Newsvine political articles/seeds like occurred during the Presidential campaign last year. I personally generally stayed off those types of articles after seeing how they were.
Regarding earnings, I guess I probably make about a quarter an hour for the time I spend on Newsvine if all the time I spend reading articles on other sites that I may or may not choose to seed is included. But money is not my primary motive in life or on Newsvine.
I don't know if Newsvine earnings are based soley on pageviews or not. But, for June I earned $32.65 on Newsvine, which works out to about $1.064 per thousand pageviews based on my calculations and Google Analytics data.
It would be nice if Newsvine paid particularly gifted people a higher rate than the average Newsviner, if they don't already. But it would be very difficult to do so fairly, without bias.
By the way, thanks to Newsvine user Robert Blevins - AB of Seattle for his nice article "Boosting Traffic to a News Column," which helped educate me about Google Analytics, etc., and is linked to here: http://adventurebooks.newsvine.com/_news/2008/08/12/1741252-boosting-traffic-to-a-news-column-
One of the nice things about Newsvine is that it allows crossposting articles on other sites, which is something many sites that probably pay better do not allow.
Also, at least we do get paid something, and apparently MSNBC and Newsvine are profitable. Unfortunately many media companies are going bankrupt. Even the famous Readers' Digest with a circulation of millions is filing for bankruptcy according to a Wall Street Journal article excerpt linked to here: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125051784100336921.html
I am thankful for my innumerable blessings!
Call me an optimist.
Regarding the above quote from schnoo's comment #1.2:
I am an optimist, too.
Newsvine was good about two years ago. Now it's not worth a bucket of warm spit.

If you really feel that way, you know where the door is. We'll all miss you.
As charming as you are predictable, Bill.
Apparently you "like" Newsvine much more than you actually claim.
No...don't be upset with Bill Harrison. Although Bill and I are on opposite sides of the political fence, we definitely agree on the question of Newsvine quality. It has fallen off dramatically since the election ended. Anybody and anyone with a keyboard posts up whatever they wish, no matter how ridiculous, and irregardless of their ability to spell a simple headline. Some others cast out flame bait in an effort to draw cheap traffic.
I have suggested several times that NV tighten up its requirements for membership. Right now all you need is a username and an email address. A lot of forums are starting to ask for a bit more than that.
I stick with Newsvine only because my column gets a steady amount of traffic daily even if I don't put out a new article for a week. So I feel a sort of responsibility to these folks, whomever they are. I also feel that things at NV would simply get worse if the better writers (not bragging, just hopefully a fact) bail out on the site.
Schnoo: When you post up your article about Newsvine earnings, you should check the NV Community group box and the MetaVine group box as well. I put up an identical article three hours after you did because I did not see any references to the earnings at those groups. The monthly notice usually appears in one of them.
If you republish this article and check those groups, I will remove my article as a courtesy, since you were first with your notice.
However...(laughs)...I'm using your article right now to preserve my link to the film Public Enemies. It was in my article. If you haven't seen this movie, at least drop by and let the trailer load. It's a pretty hot trailer.
I went to see this film twice, and the second time was to do the review.
On a side note, when I reach 500 illustrated articles at Newsvine, I am selecting the best 366 of them and putting them into a big book. No kidding.
robert
People can write as many articles on any topic they please, as far as I'm concerned. I don't feel being first about something gives me proprietary rights. The subject of earnings (or anything else) is public domain, as I see it. Maybe that's not the official Newsvine pov, but it's my unofficial one.
I kind of consider Bill's complaint about the lack of quality he perceives here at Newsvine to be rather hollow, considering that he actually threatened to kill me during a disagreement we had a short time ago. There are quite a few "long-time" viners whose behaviour of late has been rather less than exemplary and some of the personal attacks I have seen by them against others has been simply jaw-droppingly unacceptable.
If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem.
The quality here at Newsvine would skyrocket if individuals like Bill left, and took their habit of death threats and profanity with them.
considering that he actually threatened to kill me during a disagreement we had a short time ago.
Gotta link for that. I'd like to see it.

That one you may need to back up with names. Otherwise.....
The article was deleted. However feel free to contact tyler if you don't believe me: I certainly complained about the death threats to him, and I'm sure he hasn't forgotten. Heck, just ask Bill: he's probably proud of it.
Other instances I'm sure you've personally witnessed.
So, that's a "don't have it" on the first part and a non-answer on the second? Before you blow your stack, I'm not being bellicose here, just asking.
I really don't have any control over articles getting deleted. I can't even find it in my personal history. But, I'm sure tyler can confirm it for you: so there's my answer, even though it's not the direct answer (and link) I would have liked to have given you. I'm surprised that Bill hasn't proudly stood up to confirm this yet, actually (time will tell).
As for the second, I believe that's been more than answered.
I'm not interested in any further animosity. Are you?
1.10
@!$%# you, "truther".
My, my, is it that time of the month again? Looks like you are on a roll today. Here's another gem of yours from another thread:
And ya know, if you wanna leave and go to Politics Daily, here's two tips for ya:
1. If you wanna leave, just leave. Don't be a melodramatic drama queen and expect your minions to put out heartfelt pleas for you to stay. This is like the 10th time you've threatened to leave. Do it already!
2. If you can't handle the moderated environment here at Newsvine, you're gonna be a complete failure in the unmoderated environment at Politics Daily where all profane comments are not moderated and will shred you and your "articles" to tiny bits before you can say "Help Obama!"
Nice example. Particularly charming is Bill's response:
No, the only "special bond" I have was broken when your mama crossed her legs.
Yeah, Bill is really doing all he can to raise the intelligent and civil quality of the discussion here at Newsvine, isn't he. /sarcasm

Hear, hear!
Complete and utter bull@!$%#. The comments in question were on a "truther" seed (see the Canuck's a "truther") and all I did was offer to offer to introduce a few of the "truthers" to a couple of friends of mine who almost died at the Pentagon including one who's a light heavyweight boxer from Brockton, MA with a kind of short temper.
In any event. I'm done with Newsvine after today's obscene idiocy following the death of Bob Novak. See you on Politics Daily if you're so inclined.
Bill, that's not quite truthful, but then again, I'm not exactly surprised at your decision to be less than honest.
In any event. I'm done with Newsvine
Bye-Bye!
We'll all miss you. Oodles.
I checked out Politics Daily. I did not see anything about just signing up and receiving money for articles, although I may have looked in the wrong place. I saw a group of hired columnists doing the writing.
You know me, though. I have a certain amount of gall. I sent them an application via their contact link.
Now it's not worth a bucket of warm spit.
It's not totally worthless, Bill. It still has brighter spots than most internet "forums", which it seems MSNBC.com has made us, it's definitely no longer a citizen journalism site. This is the biggest reason why I agree that Newsvine was better two years ago. I blame the perceived lucrativeness of political "articles" attacking the opposition with feebleness.
Life is too short, especially for someone like me with a short attention span. And I don't follow closely enough (obviously) who is pissed at who around here. I need a freakin' scorecard to keep up. And I'm not that into keeping score.
And I don't follow closely enough (obviously) who is pissed at who around here. I need a freakin' scorecard to keep up.
Yes, you would indeed.
And I'm not that into keeping score.
ha, Ok.
Ben Josephs says in part:
'I blame the perceived lucrativeness of political "articles" attacking the opposition with feebleness.'
Well, maybe. But there are a ton of sites where people post up political articles of one leaning or another. In the case of NV, if you allow anyone and everyone to post up unedited junk without even making them go public first...well there is going to be trouble. And with that trouble comes another problem...a drop in traffic, because the majority of people who actually view your column are 'regular' folks without an ax to grind. They are just looking for news.
If they see too much junk, then they simply move on to another site.
By 'making them go public' I mean this:
On regular news sites, contributors are not known by anonymous monikers such as 'Catlover 13' or the like. They have names, faces, a bio, and stand behind their opinions. This also has the effect of making you more responsible about what you post.
This comment made me laugh!!!!

Taxinum2wice,
Thanks buddy. I just get sick of these drama queens who think the world revoves around them.
By my reckoning, the third worst month by CPM since I started tracking in Oct '07. But hey it's more than Digg gives me.
I'm quite sure I don't have any idea what you're talking about!
Spiffie: Dump Digg. They are LOSERS. (laughs)
Seriously, though. I want to say something about Readers' Digest possibly going under. Have you seen the magazine lately? The paper is thinner, the cover smaller, the amount of content much less, and not as good as it once was.
Getting away from your core values is a sure road to failure.
