50 percent more US children went hungry in 2007

WASHINGTON – Some 691,000 children went hungry in America sometime in 2007, while close to one in eight Americans struggled to feed themselves adequately even before this year's sharp economic downtown, the Agriculture Department reported Monday.

This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

The parents should learn how to cook for those kids.

Where are the responsibilities and how do they know about those hunger kids?

    What?????

I don't think the problem is a lack of culinary skills.

Overall, the 36.2 million adults and children who struggled with hunger during the year was up slightly from 35.5 million in 2006. That was 12.2 percent of Americans who didn't have the money or assistance to get enough food to maintain active, healthy lives.

Not sure where you come up with cooking ... What exactly are they supposed to cook?!?

    det

Start with three pounds of nothing, slowly mix in two cans of nothing, sprinkle in some nothing and a dash of nothing.  Serve with a side dish of nothing. (Recipe will serve millions.)

This is just proof that we need to take a break from helping everyone else in the world and fix what's wrong at home.

I remember what it was like to be hungry, when every bit of food I could get my hands on went to my kids before I ate.  Through hard work and perseverance I was able to improve my situation, but with the economy being what it is right now, others can't do that.  The money for college and the better jobs just aren't there.

And forgive me for a mini rant I'm about to have, but one thing that really chaps my ass is the people who get food stamps and food from the food bank who don't need it.  They take up what could go to others who are really deserving of help.  I worked with a woman who was a single mom with two kids like myself.  We made the same wages and our rents were within dollars of each others.  I had to pay for daycare and she didn't .  But even with that expense I could still take care of my family without food stamps and we were comfortable.  She got $90 a month in food stamps and that "barely bought meat" according to her.  She went to the food bank once a week and walked out with boxes of food.  There was no shame in her game- she was very open about this with her coworkers.  I hate seeing people like that driving brand new cars and milking the system at the same time.  If state agencies and food banks weeded these milkers out they would have more to go around for those who are really in need.

I too am scared to see the numbers for '08.  We have a serious problem on our hands and I pray that under Obama we'll be able to make things better for everyone.  Let's put billions into our own economy first.

This is one of the reasons that I will not give to those "Childrens funds" or those "Adopt a kid" foundations that send the money to other countries. We need to start at home first.

Helping other countries is a great thing once you can rest assured that your home is secure and well taken care of.

I think those that are being given bail out money should have a huge cookout for those less fortunate.

We fullfill the requests from several food banks in our area several times a year..

More money is not the solution. The solution is to learn how to cook for the family instead of buying bags of chips.

oh puleeze yourself...have you ever had to live on minimum wage and try to feed your children?...please don't asume that poverty stricken parents don't cook for their children...nor assume they only feed their children junk food...and if this countries economy doesn't turn around even the middle class will...or are already finding the rising cost of food cutting deep into their budgets...if you have never felt hunger pains from lack of money to purchase food...it is very easy to respond to others hunger with comments such as yours...

Arriving from Cuba pennyless, never entered in the kitchen of my home, took a crash course OTJ and later on working in a menu for 7 with $25/wk. No money for chips or fast food.

My credentials are obvious in the NV.

I would like to see the data used.

And don't tell me than not eating in a fast food chain is "hunger".

Beans, pasta, chicken are plenty and cheap and good source of protein.
