Staunch Democrats and staunch Republicans rarely change candidates in
mid-election. Although Obama may be showing a substantial lead today, the Country is still split with a large chunk of the population still sitting on the fence.

So, who will be the tie breakers this November? I'm no political analyst, but I think logic points to the infamous Undecided voters. But who are these people, what are they thinking, and how do the politicians influence them?

I've spent a lot of time in vicious arguments between die-hard McCain and die-hard Obama believers that seemingly go nowhere but only tend to deepen the convictions about their respective candidate. In the meantime, I don't know if the Undecideds are watching, reading or listening. Quite frankly, if they are paying attention (and I bet they are) they may be confused, in shock or hiding in their closets as they try to make sense out of the vicious divide in this Country.

As we enter the final weeks of the campaign, a few topics seem to be dominating the opinion polls. For McCain observors, his judgment in selecting Palin, his erratic behavior, and his and Palin's combined negative attacks on Obama seem to be at the top of the list of concerns. As for Obama, it's his elitism, lack of experience and old friends that have voters challenging his presidential bid. And overall, the economy has dominated everything, and will likely be the deciding point for many still trying to make up their minds.

Personally, I would love to hear from some of the Undecideds out there. I'm appealing to do just that through a discussion of this article. I would also ask that those Democrats, Republicans and Independents already committed to a candidate sit back and listen to what the truly Undecided Americans really want to know and what they are feeling.

Then, as calmly and rationally as possible, we, the Decided, can respond. You, the Undecided will probably determine who gets elected this year. So please, please let us hear from you.

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

Difficult to imagine still being undecided at this point, but I guess some folks are.

Nader's not going to win anyways . . .  He doesn't even bother to get any TV ads to tell voters more about himself.  He just always runs, get 1% of the vote and ruins the election for one of the major parties.

I think a lot of the Undecided read the rantings and ravings of both party's supporters and may feel uncomfortable posting their opinions for fear of being ridiculed. Or maybe their opinions haven't just yet solidified enough to get more open and vocal. I want this column to give the Undecided a chance to ask question or speak their mind in a respectful discussion. I'm asking everyone to keep it that way because we need to hear these voices. I hope to honestly learn something here, but that can only happen if you, the Undecided speak up and/or take the accompanying polls. Thanks.

Hi :)  If you have been in vicious debates I must have caught you on your good days. LOL. I don't think you are vicious at all. I've been singing your praises. I made a post on Lisa in CA's article "Lay Down Your Arms" #7 and when I went back to her site today and answered her question wanting to know how you swayed my opinion over to vote for Obama. Afterwards I discovered she had clipped this article. Tooo funny. Guess I should thank bgates for writing that McCain AARP article. *grin*

Yes-finally. I just joined. I hope it will be more than politics. I'm sick of it all. Your comments above don't begin to describe the visceral and vile attacks on here and 98% is from the left. I don't see how the media portrays the right as badly as it does. They have blown so many minor incidents into major ones. Take a few ignorant rednecks, enhance their voices and make the whole crowd seem like they don't have the sense that God gave a Goldfish. I'm fed up with it-------can you tell?  I've tried to go on different pages to comment and virtually all I have been on are vicious and hateful.  I've set up my default page now to go to my home page instead of the front page now. It almost makes me want to go vote for John simply to root for the underdog. I hope it doesn't turn the vote back that way for him for other  generally conservative people like me who have chosen Obama this year. It's really upsetting to hear people rail conservatives as idiots. OK. Having said that to someone who actually has had conversations with me and knows I'm a reasonable person who doesn't normally have a temper, I feel much better. Thanks for the shoulder. LOL. Now I'll ask you a question I had. On groups, is there one moderator, or do various members take turns. Just wondering.  *sheepish GRIN*

Bonnie - First, you need to remember Newsvine is a more liberal based blog site. If you were to go to a Fox blog you would get more conservative spin and a lot of vicious anti-left rhetoric. I have heard other conservatives complain about the Vine, but most know they are outnumbered here and I think enjoy being the conservative "devil's advocate" or from their perspective "voice of reason". Trust me, it will be difficult to find a blog that doesn't have some bias. You also need to separate out what is friendly banter between rivals and the truly hate-filled comments. You should probably try some of the other groups that are less political. I just joined a couple that are related more closely with my profession and I'm looking forward to some less cynical discussions. I'm sorry, but I don't know the answer to your moderator question. Hang in there. BTW, not all conservatives are idiots, just most of them (I hope you are smiling).

Bonnie,

As near as I can tell there is only one "true" moderator (group admin) at a time.  There may be a way to switch who that is (not sure), but I am pretty sure almost anything can be done by the Newsvine techies that created this site.  But there are often other group members, like Helpmeunderstand (Deputy IVH Admin), that help out by answering questions.

Re: Blog vitriol...

I am with you on that... trying to participate in that melee is totally aggravating... even reading some of that stuff wears me out.  However, as HMU said, if you know where to look there is plenty of vitriol from BOTH sides.

I started blogging on the Huffington Post, a liberal biased site, but I left because it was being swamped... and I mean REALLY swamped... with hateful rhetoric and people that had no interest whatsoever in having a thoughtful, respectful, polite discussion... I am happy to discuss politics, but a very high percentage of the people interested in that topic are NOT interested in a discussion.  Newsvine is a breath of fresh air... Not only are there more respectful thoughtful people here, there are many topics available for discussion (although nothing gets traffic like politics right now).  The Newsvine CoH also seems to be fairly effective at tempering hateful mindless rhetoric.  If you think Newsvine has too much of that stuff, don't even think about looking at HuffPo.  Try joining some of the less political groups on Newsvine... Among others, I have joined Reigning Cats and Dogs... I happened to discover a link to another website there that was one of the funniest things I have ever seen... They say laughing is supposed to be good for our health, and I swear I added years to my life with that one...

Helpme-I'm gonna reach through this screen and smack the snot outta you. *GRIN* JK but you aready know that. LOL. I love the way you so lovingly referred me to a more conservative place where I could blog that had spin and rhetoric. You're a pill. LOL.  Actually, Sean Hannity has almost single handedly destroyed that network. I believe that was either him or his wife standing in that crowd yelling "Terrorist". Were it not for his show, I think the network might actually have a little more credence. I don't know why they allow it. I think he is as ignorant as that woman John McCain admonished.  I go to CNN for Glenn Beck, to Fox and watch Bill O and then change the network to make sure I don't hang around for Sean. What is your profession or area of expertise? Well, I talked to my therapist and she said I am just too hypersensitive to be in these liberal areas. I have decided that I am only going to concentrate on fairness in the media and moderation for the most part. I'm sure if you are tracking friends you'll run into some of my recent posts. I'll bump into ya soon!

MM-Familiar yes, and actually The Huffington Post and Daily Cos are luckily on the net. If they were in print I'd line my cat's litter pans with them.  The HP is at least starting to moderate itself a little better than it used to. The Cos got worse.  I still can't believe Obama spoke at their convention or dinner. Of course Hillary did too. Talk about pandering. That borders on guilt by association since they both felt it necessary to make a statement that just because they were speaking there didn't mean they agreed with their views. LOL.

So Helpme is the Deputy Adm. of IVH. HE HE We'll call him (?) Sherriff HELP!  I guess what I was asking was about people seeding articles as far as who does it-anyone in group or only one person--things like that.

HELP ME--You can answer that part. *SMILE*.

I'll have to check out some of the other groups. I'm a cat nut, so that might be a good thing. I tried to figure out how to find pets but couldn't. I'll hitchhike off of your page. :).You're right. I do need to laugh more. The bank ignored my fax to stop auto deducting my house payment for this month so I could catch up on a bunch of bills. They did it anyway and cost me $75 in overdrafts. I was pretty stressed when I made the above post.  I was having a "moment". ROFL.

Smilin' atcha both!

I know you are wanting the Sheriff's answer on this one but I need to chime in on this one too...  The short answer is YES, anyone in the group can post seeds... HOWEVER!!!!!  They MUST contain significant writing by the IVG member... either in the summary or the comments.

There are a few things I didn't anticipate when I started this group that I will need to straighten out in an article that I hope to post in the next few days (I do need to find some time to do a few other things in my life)...

OMG... It is the Newsvine addiction intervention crew... Ahhh!!!   What are you doing???  What??? Get this straight jacket off of me... Aaaahhhhh!!!

Ron Paul / Huckabee no longer possible, that placed me as undecided; Obama's health care plan is less than i want- if i wanted a health care plan (he should have either used Hillary's or Elizabeth Edwards' ... Palin is just too much of a joke... McCain votes against both the new GI Bill and every budget cycle votes against all infant entitlements like saying to that 11 year old Rape/Incest victim that she must have the Devil's baby but then she's on her own to Feed it, clothe it, give the infant medical care or even education like "Head-Start" soooo what was the point in claiming "Right-to-Life" if McCain really meant "Right-to-be-Born" but after birth, find your own garbage can to eat from...

This Last Debate is McCain's last shot at my vote, Obama gave himself an extra inning w/the msm buy ... Nader is too self-absorbed ... Barr is just running for something to do...

What else can you help me understand about this choice that to me has No Choice...?

Thank you metonitoo, this is exactly what I'm looking for. You prove that it's not just about the economy. Issues like health care, veterans, and children are being put on the back shelf. While I am not undecided, I suggest you do the following to help in your decision:

      1. Set priorities for your issues, then determine which candidate best reflect the view of your top priorities.

      2. Look at each party's platform.  How does the party's idealogy (sp) compare to your beliefs.  There are issues that are not openly debated, but are ideologically embedded in the party's belief system (i.e,. stem cell research)

      3. Keep in mind the next president will probably appoint up to 3 supreme court justices.  Based on what you believe the candidate stands for, will you feel comfortable in their choice.

      4. Who do you feel will surround himself with the best and brightest advisors who will serve the candidate AND the country. Know that neither candidate can do it all alone.

      5. Would you be able to comfortably defend your choice, if neccesary to friends, family, co-workers, and/or your children.

Hope this objective method of assessing your choice helps.

      Schnoo,

As a non-party affiliated libertarian, I am at loggerheads over the Barr nomination, if I wanted to vote Repub, I would, but to run a Repub as a Libertarian has got my goat!  I personally like John McCain and respect his service and sacrifice to our nation so at this point I'm leaning his way.

Obama never had a chance for my vote after I found that he is second in the Senate for receiving the highest campaign contributions from Fanny Mae/Freddy Mac.  Truth be told the chances before that were slim that he would have won me over.  I still am dithering between the allegiance to my libertarian ideals and my respect for John M.

Of couse, an informed decision requires hard work. One has to shut out the noise and static that comes from the so-called pundits and the fillibusters represented on both sides. When you hear or read something, make sure that it is substantiated in unbiased reports. Remember what is said may not necessarily weigh more than what goes unsaid.  For example, when you hear that Obama is second in receiving the highest campaign contributions from Fannie/Freddy.  What's left unsaid is that all except about $1600.00 came from employees.  Senator McCain received more campaign contributions than Senator Obama from the top executives of Fannie/Freddy.  Who do you think has the potential to wield the most influence?  If you're serious about who to vote for, there's no easy way out.  You have to find the unbiased resources from several media outlets.  Compare what you find to your own intellectual and moral compass.  Don't get hung up on any one issue.  Our world is too complex for that.    It's hard work, but that is as it should be.  Once you're satisfied, go to the voting booth and cast your ballot.  However the election turns out, you'll know you've participated as an informed citizen.

cookiemommy - You are about the most refreshing person I've come across on the Vine. Again, your comments are respectful and fair. Weeding out the propaganda from the truth is  difficult because the propaganda always contains enough truth to make it plausible. Anyone who bases their vote on what the pundits say is making a big mistake.  Anyone who blindly votes their party simply because they've always voted their party could be making a big mistake. What's even worse are those who know they are wrong, but rather than admit it, will vote against there better judgment.  I applaud the Undecideds for taking there time to do their research so that ultimately they make the right choice based on facts rather than sound bites.

Thanks, it's how I try to approach most everything I do.  If it's important enough for me to consider, then it's important enough for me to make an informed decision.  I try to avoid the garbage in, garbage out phenomena.  In the bid whist card game, there's a saying, 'study long, study wrong'.  Well, I believe 'study wrong, suffer long'.

I by-passed the web based blogs and really hunted for a good round-up of facts, I even passed by the stories in my local Orange County Register because of the perceived Libertarian editorial slant.  I will try again focusing on John McCain contributions for those two horrible institutions, because all I could find on John was one of his campaign staff was a lobbyist for Freddy/Fanny.  If you have a link I will look and contemplate with an open mind, however as a libertarian to my core, you must know that the only effect would be to push me toward Barr.

I would like to inform you that I don't really listen to the MSN or talk radio to much with the exception of "The Larry Elder Show" He is a very fair libertarian commentator out here in L.A. CA.  Punditry be damned and all of that, I would prefer to make up my own mind. :)

Take care and thank you for calling me to task in a civil fashion,

      Aloha

robertlyn - The following is from PolitiFact (Politifact.com)   First, my apologies in the amount I gave for the non-employee contributions to Obama.  I dropped a zero.  It should have read about $16,000.00 instead of about $1,600.00. The article reads:
"Here we'll look at McCain's statement that Obama received the second-most campaign contributions from Fannie Mae. The source for this data is the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics, which has compiled a list of which political leaders received the most money from employees of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Obama's campaign cites this source to back up its claim that John McCain has received more than $2 million form big oil.
On the Freddie and Fannie question, it as McCain said: Obama is No. 2 on the list, with $126,349, right after Sen. Chris Dodd, D-Conn., chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, who had $165,400. But the list requires a few notes of explanation. Corporations cannot give to candidates, so the center's list adds up contributions from Fannie and Freddie employees and their families. Obama has received a lot of money during his presidential campaign, though, and Fannie and Freddie don't make his list of top 20 companies. (The top three companies with employees donating to Obama are Goldman Sachs, University of California, and Citigroup, according to the center.)
The New York Times looked at contributions from Fannie and Freddie's boards of directors and lobbyists, who are technically not employees.  That analysis found Fannie and Freddie-related contributors gave $169,000 to John McCain and his related committees, compared with $16,000 to Obama and his related committees.
Nevertheless, the center's information does reflect which candidates are getting the most money from Fannie and Freddie employees. There are other ways to parse the campaign finance numbers, but McCain is correct when he says Obama got the second-most money on a list compiled by a respected, nonpartisan campaign finance watchdog. He would have been more accurate if he would have noted that he was talking about Fannie and Freddie employees. We rate his statement Mostly True"
Robertlyn, however further this pushes you toward Barr, so be it.  Only you know what principles drive you in your choice. Larry Elders, hmmm, but no problem.

robertlyn - sorry, I'm new to this blog thing. I don't know how to set up links.  Anyway the PolitFact article I referenced is dated, Friday, September 19th, 2008 and titled, 'Barack Obama got more campaing contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac "than any other member of congress, except for the Democratic chairmen of the committee that oversees them." '

Well, it doesn't look like this article will make it to the top of the Vine, but it has stayed true to it's intent by being friendly and respectful.  Quite frankly, I was interested in hearing from the Undecided because I thought they might shed new perspective on the temperament of the campaign which seems to have gone seriously mean. I'm fearful the hatred being spewed out there could actually result in civil unrest. Now I'm a child of the sixties and I've been through a little of this before, and I guarantee it's nothing to look forward to. So, I would like to appeal to both sides to cool down and stop the character assassination tactics. What we do on the Vine is normally harmless, but there are folks out there that will be willing to put words to action in an instant.

I could tell you were a flower child. I'll bet you still listen to the Beatles. Although I've certainly hung on to some of my idealism, a little vacation in Vietnam and my work have certainly grounded me in reality. I would just hope we still have a little bit more to contribute.

      Cookiemomma,

Thank you for the info, I will look at the site and think on things, I do appreciate your time and effort.  The link function has been "buggy" since the "upgrade" so I just copy and paste the URL. :)

      Friend request on it's way.

      HMU1,

I know how you feel, the hatred expressed from both sides is out-of-hand.  I have been avoiding political threads for the past month or so, but these "question" pieces tend to draw me in. :)

I know in my libertarian heart that neither candidate is going to change the world or the US governmental system much, but a further bump on the way to socialism will be the wrong direction IMHO.  What this country needs is a Strong turn toward personal responsibility again IMHO.

      Keep up the good fight.

Have a great night both of you,

      Aloha

Racism could be the deciding factor here, according to the cable talking heads, but I don't think so. Wait until Mon and every day after that for more bad ec news. Like many, it's hard to belive that there are U's at this late day in our current situation!

I think there are the Independents, especially the Libertarians, who don't like either candidate and are conflicted between voting for their candidate who won't win, the two main party candidates who they don't like, or not voting at all. Then there are those who like Obama but are pro life and are afraid of committing some kind of sin, or have a kid in the military and think McCain would be the more supportive. Then there all of those who want the person who can get us out of the economic mess but don't know who that is. Personally, after seeing how hateful and negative McCain/Palin have become, I think most of the undecided will go with Obama, if for nothing else, the lessor of two evils.

Well... I am sure you know I am not exactly undecided, but I thought I would jump in anyway.

After the last debate (#2) I heard someinterviews of "undecideds."  Nothing any of the people that tilted toward McCain made any sense to me, but I am severely encumbered by my overwhelmingly liberal brain.  I am also a little puzzled by some of the comments made by people that tilted toward Obama.  At the top of that list were statements something like this:  "I am favoring Obama now because he looked Presidential."

            What does that mean???

Are we so embarrassed by the thoroughly un-presidential President we currently have that we will take anything as long as it LOOKS like a President.

I hope it actually means they were swayed by Obama's ability to respond to the debate questions with well reasoned answers expressed with clarity, and offering good solutions with strong appeal to average Americans.

But no matter what presidential quality you formerly undecideds see in Barack Obama, WELCOME!

MM - I tried responding to your comment before the debate tonight but I kept getting error messages. Well, I'm back. Yes, I too hope the Undecideds recognize Obama's intelligence, skills, leadership and the fact that he has real positions and solutions to problems. No, they won't all work. And, yes it is not going to be an easy four years. But he is a realist and he has a plan.

HMU- I was getting all kinds of Newsvine server errors too.  In fact it stopped only a short time ago.

I just seeded a HuffPo article on the post election polls which look like they are favoring Obama.  I am not clipping it to the IVG, because it has none of my own writing in it.  But it seems pertinent to this article, so with your permission I will reference it in a comment here.

I've had to report errors twice today. They responded and also said the traffic during and after the debate is extremely heavy. On top of all of that, I don't know whether or not you have Windows, but as for me, Windows decided to do their Automatic Update around 9:15 tonight. My pc crawled to a standstill because I didn't know what was happening and kept clearing out my temp files and history trying to speed up my pc. LOL.   What is IVG?  I thought John did well tonight--don't smack me. Hasn't changed my mind. Just an opinion.

Ya know, I HAD my automatic turned off, but for some reason, it was going crazy anyway. I turned my spyware off a while back because it was interfering with the vine for some reason. I don't know why Windows kept on like that, but the Icon appeared in the bottom right corner of my screen. When I clicked on it the message said they were ready to download and I told it to proceed and then the icon and everything just disappeared. It started running like crazy again, so I decided to do a manual update and it showed I needed all 5 items. When I told it to proceed, a popup kept telling me it failed to install. When I went to the settings and turned the automatic back on, everything started installing. It was crazy. Some gremlin was running around for sure.

MMMan-so you're an ARAMCO brat! My Stepbrother worked for them over in Saudi Arabia for a few years back in the 70's. The one here fabricated fiberglass buildings. They had to stay in a fenced compound when they weren't working. He said they hated Americans so much that he always lied and told them he was Canadian.  He was a design engineer.  The company is now called VFP (condensed from Virginia Fiberglass Products) and he has worked his way up. He is now the President/CEO. Imagine.

Helpme-did you find my link to Obama's speech he gave today here in town? MMMan Obama was here in town about a half mile from me. I couldn't go see him. If you want to hear his whole rally here's the link. It's about 40 min long.
