Another missing white girl....with a not-so-secret Internet secret

Emily.

Zoey.

advertisement

Emily Sander, an 18 year-old college student from El Dorado, Kansas has been missing since last Friday. She is believed to be the victim of foul play. Unfortunately, nothing here so far too out of the ordinary in this modern world.

But, her college buddies at Butler Community College (about 30 miles from Wichita) have blabbed Emily's little secret to police investigators. It seems that Ms. Sander was leading a double life as internet porn star Zoey Zane. (She had her own personal site, but it's been taken down. So, don't bother looking for it.)

Sander, 18, was last seen in the company of a guy named Israel Mireles, 24, whom she supposedly met at a bar. Reports have it that Mireles now may be making a run for the border, along with his own teenage girlfriend. Meanwhile, divers are searching area lakes and streams for Emily/Zoey.

This from USA Today: "Detectives tell The Wichita Eagle that they found blood in a motel room that Mireles rented outside Wichita. They're aware of the website "situation" and are trying to figure out if it factors into Sander's disappearance, the paper says.

""That motel room was found to appear in great disarray and a large quantity of blood was found in the room and clothing was found to be missing," police Chief Tom Boren says, according to KSN-TV."

One report I read stated that Sander had just signed a big Internet porn contract and had broken the news to her parents about it on Thanksgiving Day, the day before she went missing. That must have been an extra special day for everybody concerned. Oh yeah, and her boyfriend supposedly broke up with her over her new porn contract. Just passing along the rumors I've read.

So. So far we've got a teenage white girl from the heart of the Heartland missing and presumed dead, the same teenage white girl from the Heartland involved in internet porn, a messy (alleged) crime scene, an alleged perp missing and said to be on the run with yet another teenager, a shocked family rocked by sordid revelations and likely tragedy, and a lot of guys in wet suits jumping into chilly waters looking for something tangible to confirm the worst possible scenario.

Even though the Hollywood writers are on strike, we'll no doubt see this plotline on "Law & Order" soon enough.

Update from CBS: "Clement Sander confirmed to CBS News that the body was that of his granddaughter, Emily."

What's this?
Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

These kinds of stories really irk me because missing white girls get all the attention but missing black girls get little if any. In my home state of Mississippi there is a missing black female college student whose story I have not seen reported on anything other than the local tv news and an obscure AP posting. A few years ago a black female college student was murdered by a former university employee and the story got no national news coverage. It's all very frustrating to see how if the victim is white and pretty the coverage is abundant but otherwise someone might just happen to stumble across an obscure news story while conducting a web search. Those who say that race doesn't matter in this country are living with blinders on.

Agree on much of that. Have we had a missing African-American child or woman even remotely grab the national attention in the way of Jon Benet Ramsey or Natalie Holloway?

Our local community channel occasionally features a slide show of children missing in our area. They are almost all black. Now, I realize that not all these children are truly "missing" (as in kidnapped or murdered)....many could be involved in some kind of custody dispute or other family situation. And others, the teenagers, may have left on their own. Still, it's very disturbing to watch the photos roll by and ponder what's become of all those smiling faces.

Yeah, it's pretty sad alright. But it's not only black kids. Poor white kids kind of disappear too unless they're cute. It's really kind of a sick voyeurism imho. Does anyone think Natalee Holloway would be such a subject of discussion if she were an ugly duckling?

I just googled some missing children stats, but they're too depressing even to post. As someone said, if there were a disease killing the same number of kids as there are kids missing, we'd be moving heaven and earth to find a cure.

But to answer your question, it seems we're never without a missing white woman/girl story in the media. There has to be some kind of angle to give the story long legs, so to speak. Child beauty queen, a relationship with a pol, being married to a cop, over 8 months pregnant, internet porn star, etc.

It may not happen as often, but it does happen.

In Kansas City, Precious Doe was in the news for weeks. I'm pretty sure it got national attention, as well. (Link is from CNN.)

I remember that story. Somewhat fueled by the horror regarding the decapitation of a child and also by her mysterious anonymity. Not to mention the "Precious Doe" name itself.

True. I also have never seen an unattractive or fat missing child heralded on the news, yet at some point there had to be some who went missing.

I do think it's all about the "attractiveness" quality, and that's sad.

I hope the tech guy who came up with that sound gets royalties every time it plays.

One report I read said that the Mireles guy is an "undocumented" worker. And the girlfriend he's on the lam with is 16 and pregnant. Geeesh.

I just found an article that quoted the police chief Boren saying Mireles had "resident alien" status. As this all happened almost a week ago, I'm guessing Mireles has melted back over the border by now.

Why is it that every person in porn is a "porn star"? Not every person who appears in nonporn is a "movie star."

I think the threshold for being considered a "star" in the porn world is two page views.

I hope it's on SVU--or, as I call it, "The Good One."

I would guage, though, that the porn had little to do with the kidnapping. I mean, she meet the guy at a BAR--I'm not that well versed in the dating word, but even from little I know, I know it's Date Rape City.

Still, can't know until there's more confirmation.
