Dow Off 167 Points in Late Swoon - New York Times

advertisement

The disquiet on Wall Street showed no signs of letting up as the Dow industrials closed below 13,000 for the first time since April and the S.&P. 500 erased its gains for the year.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

I might just have to put out my forecast right now.... 25% off 14000 by the end of June 2008. That is, DOW 10,500!

We used to have a guy where I formerly posted who's trademark comment was that he was "short on Bush" meaning that the Bush economy would come unhinged sooner rather than later.

Personally, I don't think he was in the market at all.

I thought 'swoon' was yours but it's the original - either way I'm impressed.

I only use swoon when I'm rhyming moon and June.

I thought that was funny too. Along with ripple, low, flat, dip, blip, slide, popping, turbulence, rocked and slump the metaphors just keep coming.

Personally, I would describe it as the first stages of cardiac arrest and the cash injections as an attempt to stimulate a heart-beat.

Right now its experiencing fibrillation.

what about a Gershwin tune?

I had no idea Wall Street investors were so much like Victorian ladies - maybe they're corsets are just laced too tight?

Wall Street investors are like bugs in a rug as long as things are going up. Then they're like bears out of their lairs, when things are heading south.

Think this is the one where everybody realizes they've just been flipping pieces of paper at each other ?

Fear, greed and numbers on a board. The stock market.

CRISIS! That piece of paper I bought last week might not be worth anything? What do you mean my dollars are worth less now? Isn't everything measured in dollars? Even gold and other commodities are being sold at a discount. What gives!

Take your paper back, I demand a refund!

You're lucky if you got a piece of paper and not just a few ones and zeros in a computer somewhere.
